Community Service

Community service is sometimes ordered by the court as a condition of a particular sentence. Sometimes I advise my clients to do community service prior to court in hopes of achieving a better result. There are many different types of cases in which I recommend that my client perform community service. For those clients who live in Wake County, a list of agencies that regularly accept community service volunteers can be found in the list below.

Any other legitimate, charitable, non-profit organization that will authorize an individual to perform community service can fulfill the same function. Such agencies include police departments, fire departments, municipal parks and recreation departments, churches, and schools. For those clients who need to perform community service who do not live in Wake County, they can contact such an organization in their home county to perform the community service.

When community service is ordered by the court as a condition of a judgment, the community service is generally performed under the auspices of an agency in the courthouse. The telephone number for the local community service office in the Wake County courthouse is 919-733-5100. Information regarding community service placement and the required number of hours can be obtain by calling that number and asking for the supervisor in charge of the client’s case.

If an individual is performing community service based on his attorney’s advice, he will need to ensure that the agency for which the service is performed provides written verification, on official letterhead, confirming the performance of the community service and the number of hours performed. We must have written verification of the community service to present to the court.
